Houses are more than isolated “sanctuaries” in which people eat, sleep and watch television. They are elements of a community - a “community of people”.

Unfortunately, houses are often treated as being more important to community design than the interrelationships of the people who live in them. All too often, community design involves having as many houses as the local zoning codes permit resulting in large subdivisions with very little character. And, to make things worse, the resulting collection of houses is often buffered from the streets by large front yards with little or no consideration for neighborhood interaction.

Sidewalks, if they even exist, are often built to comply with local ordinances and generally are not designed to complement the relationship between the house and the community. Streets are typically cluttered with cars parked along the curbs with pedestrians competing with vehicles for the center of the road. The end result is that people who live in these neighborhoods generally feel like afterthoughts.

By contrast, Mosaic Oaks, was designed from its inception to be a FRONT PORCH community. As the name implies, each house features a large front porch. To encourage neighborly interaction, the porches are in relatively close proximity to the community sidewalk that runs immediately in front of the houses. People can relax on their front porch within a short distance of where their neighbors may stroll, thereby encouraging community interaction.

Of course, the community's design only starts at the front porch. Mosaic Oaks began with the concept of it a being small neighborhood with intimately sized lots, all fronted by naturally landscaped community spaces. The lots are arranged around a private circular street (fittingly named “Mosaic Oaks Circle”) with continuous sidewalks on both sides of the road.

The community's design separates moving vehicles from parked ones by having parallel parking spots in front of each house to augment the parking afforded by the house's driveway (i.e. parking on the “street” is discouraged).

Between the sidewalk and the curbs are plantings of indigenous hardwood trees and select shrubbery to provide a natural buffer between the street and the pedestrian areas. In addition to providing a buffer, the trees will grow to provide shade and a connection to nature that will encourage pedestrian traffic long in to the future.

The sidewalks start and end at two beautiful ponds that border the Mosaic Oaks entrance drive. Teeming with fish and surrounded by lush natural landscaping filled with birds, squirrels, and other wildlife, the ponds are self-contained ecosystems.Along with the spectacle of aeration fountains in the middle of each pond, there is an undeniably relaxing effect one gets from looking in to the water. And, to maximize the effect, people can truly enjoy the view from large wood-framed pergolas that extend out and over each pond.

Adjacent to one of the ponds alongside the sidewalk is Mosaic Oaks’ neighborhood herb garden. Another gathering place for neighbors, the herb garden gives people the pleasure of fresh herbs for their meals and a place to visit with others.

In the final analysis, Mosaic Oaks is an example of a neighborhood designed to be people friendly. Come take a walk in Mosaic Oaks and see for yourself!
