H.E.R.S. Index

The Home Energy Rating Service (HERS) Index provides homeowners with a relative value of their homes' energy efficiency. Provided by independent consultants, HERS indexes factor in everything from air tightness to appliance efficiency. The homes in Mosaic Oaks all undergo a HERS test conducted by CHELCO, the local Touchstone Collective Energy Cooperative. Accordingly, each Mosaic Oaks home comes with its own particular HERS index score.

An index value of 100 points represents the energy efficiency of an average home. Every point below one hundred represents a one per cent increase in efficiency. Accordingly, a Mosaic Oaks home with a HERS index of 65 is 35% more energy efficient that an average house, translating into a 35% lower power bill. Of course, not all houses are even as energy efficient as a so-called "average house", so the question is, if you're buying a house, do you know the HERS index of the house you're thinking of buying? If not, don't you think you should? It could mean the difference in hundreds or even thousands of dollars every year in energy bills.
